Could the financial crisis hurt craft brewers?

Uh, yes. Firstly, we here at GreenGrog reported on the crunch being felt by small business owners a year before the financial crisis we’ve all come to know and report on. Secondly, we reported on it during really serious hops shortage crisis. And thirdly, the financial crisis is going to hurt everyone. So whoever wrote that headline is either stupid, or was using it as an excuse to brag about previous coverage and link off to a story on the Huffington Post about organic brews and craft brewers in trouble.

Of course, some people think you can save money and the environment at the same time.

A bigger example? Ford CEO Alan Mulally said on CNBC this morning that he thought that a proposed $25 billion bailout would enable the big three American automakers to save themselves and meet tighter environmental standards.

Of course, it doesn’t look like he’ll get that bailout, so he can talk a pretty big game right now with relative impunity, but the point is that if you use less fuel and fewer resources, you’re going to save money. So it stands to reason that this is a great opportunity for brewers — and all businesses — to tighten belts and green up in the process.
